Several Shopify apps do real fraud screening for less than $10 a month, and a few built-in ones are free.

What Are the Cheapest AI Fraud Prevention Tools for Shopify Stores?

The cheapest AI fraud prevention tools for Shopify are Shopify’s own free Fraud Filter and Fraud Analysis, followed by paid apps like Disputifier ($3.99/mo) and Blockify ($7.99/mo).

The cheapest real options aren’t hidden. They’re sitting right in the Shopify App Store. Most cost less than your monthly coffee budget.

Shopify’s own Fraud Filter app is free. It runs simple rule-based screening. Block an order if it matches a country, an IP range, or an email pattern you flag. Shopify also ships two more built-in layers at no cost. Fraud Analysis scores every order’s risk level. Shopify Protect reimburses eligible fraud chargebacks on qualifying US Shop Pay orders, according to Shopify’s Help Center.

Beyond that free baseline, a small group of paid apps price themselves for small stores, not enterprise budgets. Blockify starts at $7.99 a month. It blocks proxy, VPN, and Tor traffic before it ever reaches checkout. Disputifier runs $3.99 a month. It uses AI to catch disputes before they turn into full chargebacks. NoFraud and Chargeback: Auto Prevention are free to install. They only charge when you actually use their screening or refund features.

None of these match Signifyd’s guaranteed chargeback protection, which runs around $1,500 a month. But if your store does a few hundred orders a week, that price gap doesn’t mean a protection gap. It just means a different kind of protection. One built for volume, not deep pockets.

Why Are Chargebacks and Friendly Fraud Suddenly a Bigger Problem?

Chargebacks and friendly fraud are rising because most fraud now comes from real customers disputing valid purchases, not stolen cards.

“Friendly fraud” happens when a real customer makes a real purchase, then disputes the charge anyway. They claim they never got the item. Or they say they don’t recognize the charge. Meanwhile, they keep the goods.

The 2026 Chargeback Field Report found that 83.4% of enterprise merchants saw friendly fraud rise over the past three years. That’s not a niche problem anymore. It’s the leading form of fraud globally, ahead of stolen-card fraud, per the same report.

Refund abuse makes it worse. The same research puts refund abuse at over 27% of all returns industry-wide. Merchants already feel the squeeze. 38% report they’ve raised prices specifically to cover chargeback and dispute costs. That’s up from 32.5% in earlier surveys. If you sell on Shopify, you’re absorbing some version of this cost. Whether you’ve noticed it yet or not.

Here’s the part that matters most for a small store: card-not-present (CNP) fraud is exactly what most Shopify checkouts deal with, by default. No physical card gets swiped. Every online order counts as CNP. That’s why proxy detection and address checks matter more here than in a brick-and-mortar shop.

Card-not-present fraud is fraud on transactions where the physical card is never swiped, which covers nearly every online Shopify checkout.

Does Shopify’s Built-In Fraud Protection Cover Small Stores?

Yes, Shopify’s built-in tools help small stores, but they only flag risk and don’t guarantee chargeback coverage. Treat them as your floor, not your ceiling.

Shopify’s Fraud Control app gives you a dashboard. It shows your acceptance rate, your high-risk order percentage, and how much of your losses Shopify Protect covered. It’s useful. But Shopify’s own documentation is blunt about the limits. The app “doesn’t guarantee coverage against chargebacks.” It “provides insight into potential fraud, but doesn’t actively protect against it.”

That distinction matters a lot. Insight isn’t prevention. If you rely only on the free tools, you’re reading a risk score after the fact. You’re not stopping the order automatically, unless you’ve built out custom rules yourself. And custom rules take real setup time. Something a lot of small merchants never budget for.

One more limit worth knowing: Shopify’s fraud scoring only works fully if you use Shopify Payments as your processor. On a different gateway? Some of that data simply isn’t available to you at all.

Which Cheap Shopify Apps Actually Stop Fraudulent Orders?

Can You Use Open-Source Card Fraud Detection Instead of Paying for an App?

Here’s the honest answer most guides skip: not really. It’s worth knowing why before you burn a weekend on it.

Search “open source card fraud detection,” and you’ll mostly find GitHub projects built by students learning data science. They train machine learning models — logistic regression, random forest, SVM — on the same public Kaggle dataset of European credit card transactions from 2013. These are genuinely useful if you want to learn how fraud models work. They are not something you install on your Shopify store. There’s no checkout integration. No order-blocking logic. No live API you can point your store at.

That gap is the real insight for budget-conscious sellers. “Cheap” and “open source” aren’t the same path here. Cheap means a $4-a-month Shopify app with a support team and years of tuning behind its model. Open source, in this space, means a research notebook. You’d have to turn it into production infrastructure yourself — hosting, security, PCI compliance, constant retraining, all of it. For a solo Shopify merchant, that’s not a shortcut. It’s a second full-time job.

Want a low-code path that still gives you some control over the logic? That’s a real category. And it’s a completely different thing from open source.

How Do Low-Code Transaction Screening Tools Fit into a Small Budget?

Low-code screening tools like Fraud Filter and Blockify let you set order-blocking rules through a dashboard, so they fit a small budget without a developer.

Proxy detection is a screening method that spots orders coming through VPNs, proxies, or Tor, which fraudsters use to hide their real location.

A typical rule might block any order where the billing country doesn’t match the shipping country. Or where the same IP address places five orders in an hour. You don’t need a developer for that. You need ten minutes and a clear idea of what your fraud actually looks like.

The trade-off is false positives. Set your rules too aggressively, and you’ll block real customers along with fraudsters. Larger merchants report the same problem with older, legacy pattern-matching systems. Research on enterprise fraud tools found that roughly 1 in 5 legitimate transactions got flagged incorrectly under those older, rule-based and probabilistic models. So start narrow. Block the patterns you’ve actually seen in your own chargeback history. Not every theoretical risk factor you can imagine.

What Should You Do First If Chargebacks Are Eating Your Margins?

Start with data, not a new app subscription. You can’t fix a leak you haven’t measured yet.

Pull your last 90 days of chargebacks from Shopify’s Fraud Control dashboard. Look for a pattern. Same shipping region. Same email domain. Same card range. Same time of day. Real fraud usually clusters together. Random, one-off disputes are more likely friendly fraud from real customers. No fraud-screening app fixes that. Better order confirmation emails, tracking updates, and a clear return policy do.

Once you know your pattern, layer your tools in this order:

Turn on Shopify’s free Fraud Filter and Fraud Analysis first. No reason to pay before you’ve used what’s already included.

Add a cheap proxy or VPN blocker, like Blockify, if bot traffic or masked IPs show up in your data.

Add a dispute-alert tool, like Disputifier or Chargeback: Auto Prevention, if friendly fraud is your bigger drain, not stolen cards.

Only move to a paid, guaranteed-decisioning platform like NoFraud once your order volume makes a flat monthly fee cheaper than your current loss rate.

That order matters. Merchants who install every app at once often end up juggling conflicting rules across five or more disconnected tools. Larger merchant research flags this exact fragmentation as a drag on response time and dispute win rates.

Is It Worth Paying for a Chargeback Guarantee?

Sometimes. The math is simpler than it sounds, too. It comes down to your chargeback rate, not your gut feeling about risk.

If your chargeback rate sits under 0.5% of transactions, Shopify’s native tools plus a cheap rule-based app are probably enough. Once your rate creeps toward 1%, pay attention. Card networks like Visa place merchants above certain dispute thresholds into formal monitoring programs. That can mean extra fees and account scrutiny, no matter what caused the disputes.

That’s the point where a guaranteed platform — something like Signifyd or NoFraud’s guaranteed tier — starts to earn its cost. You’re not just paying for fraud detection anymore. You’re paying so someone else absorbs the loss when the model gets it wrong, instead of you. Below 1%, that insurance usually costs more than it saves. Above it, it can be the cheaper option by far.

Guaranteed decisioning is when a fraud tool approves an order and agrees to cover the loss itself if that order later turns out to be fraud.

This article is for general informational purposes and isn’t financial, legal, or payment-processing advice. Review any app’s terms and your payment processor’s chargeback policies before making a purchasing decision.

The Bottom Line for Small Shopify Stores

You don’t need an enterprise budget to fight fraud. The best AI fraud prevention tools for Shopify start with the free built-in Fraud Filter and Fraud Analysis, then layer in a cheap app or two based on what your chargeback data actually shows. If proxy and bot traffic is your problem, a $7.99 blocker handles it. If friendly fraud is draining you, a $3.99 dispute-alert tool does more than a pricey platform would.

Save the guaranteed-decisioning apps for when your chargeback rate creeps toward 1% and the math finally tips in their favor. Until then, screen smart, start narrow, and block the patterns you’ve actually seen — not every risk you can imagine. Cheap tools won’t insure your losses, but used in the right order, they’ll stop most of the fraud that’s eating your margin today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the cheapest fraud prevention option for a new Shopify store?
Shopify’s own Fraud Filter and Fraud Analysis tools are free. They’re built into every store. Start there before you pay for anything.

Do free Shopify fraud apps actually block orders, or just flag them?
It depends on the app. Fraud Filter and Blockify can auto-cancel matched orders. Shopify’s native Fraud Analysis only scores risk. It doesn’t block anything on its own, unless you build rules around it.

Is open source fraud detection software realistic for a small store?
Not in practice. Most open-source fraud detection projects are research models built on public datasets. They’re not something you can connect to a live Shopify checkout without real development work.

How do I know if I need a paid chargeback guarantee app?
Check your chargeback rate. Under 0.5%, free and low-cost tools are usually enough. Near or above 1%, a guaranteed-decisioning platform can be worth the monthly cost.

Can proxy and VPN detection alone stop most fraud?
No, but it stops a real slice of it. Proxy detection catches masked-location fraud and bot traffic. It won’t catch friendly fraud from real customers on their own devices. That needs different tools, like dispute alerts.

Marcus Delray is a fintech analyst and founder of Tech Capital Hub, where he covers payment risk, ecommerce fraud prevention, AI-driven fraud tools, fintech software, and practical merchant decision-making. His work is built to help entrepreneurs, operators, and digital-business owners understand how fraud controls work in practice — especially where chargebacks, friendly fraud, refund abuse, and store-level risk start cutting into margins.

On merchant-risk topics, he focuses on real operational questions: which fraud signals actually matter, where built-in platform protections help, where low-cost apps can reduce exposure, and when merchants may need stronger protection layers such as automated dispute prevention or guaranteed decisioning.

Rather than repeating vendor marketing language, he emphasizes source-backed explanation, current platform context, and the real tradeoffs behind cost, coverage, false positives, and ease of implementation. His goal is to help readers understand what a fraud tool actually does, where it fits in a small-store workflow, and when paying more meaningfully changes the level of protection.
